Get Your Clutter Under Control in One Weekend

Clutter wreaks havoc and causes stress at home, which is why a good decluttering plan is exactly what you need to get things under control! If you put your mind to it, you can take on all of the clutter in just one weekend. We’ll show you how.

Size It Up

Now, it can be tempting to reach for the first pile of junk you see upon stepping through the door but that’s how you get lost in the shuffle. Instead, make a plan of attack before diving in. If you plan on knocking out the whole house in one weekend, start your Friday evening with at least one big task. Choose one of the most trafficked areas in your house, whether it be the living room, the kids’ room, or the kitchen. Taking out at least one big room first will boost your confidence for the rest of the project.

Purge, Purge, Purge

Let’s be real, if there were room for you to keep all of that clutter tucked away in drawers and cabinets, would it have ended up all over the house? Probably not. That means you’re going to have to get rid of some of your stuff in order to keep your home nice and tidy.
It can feel impossible to throw things away, even things with no sentimental value but it’s necessary to tamp down those feelings and do the hard thing. Ask yourself a few questions as you consider what to throw away:
  • Have you used it in the past year?
  • Will you need it in the near future?
  • Will you be upset when it’s gone?

If you answered no to some of these questions, it might be time to part ways.

Organization is Key

Once you’ve cleared the clutter from the common areas, you’ll need to find places to put them. Baskets, under-the-bed organizers, and bins for the closet are great places to start. Not only will all of your stuff be out of sight, but you’ll also actually be able to track where it is! Do you have a kitchen drawer that has turned into a dump for all of the things you don’t have a home for? Try drawer dividers! They’ll keep the clutter manageable.

Maintenance

Sure, you’ve tackled the mess and wrangled the clutter and come out victorious. What about in two weeks when it all happens again? You need to come up with a plan to maintain the order! Pick one room each day and set about clearing the clutter. This way, you’ll keep the mess at bay and you won’t have to dedicate an entire weekend to it. A few minutes out of every day can really make a difference.
