What to Do with Your Old CD Collection?

A lot of us have old CDs lying around the house, stuffed into boxes, collecting dust in our closets or sitting in all kinds of storage units. While these old CDs have become a thing of the past, there are plenty of ways you can clear out a little space in your home by bidding them farewell or repurposing your collection. Here are a few things you can do with your old CDs

SELL THEM

You can either choose to host a garage sale and sell your old CDs along with other items or you can sell them on sites like eBay, Craigslist, or Amazon. I wouldn’t suggest selling CDs individually unless they are a special item. Try to group similar albums together by artist or genre to get rid of them in bulk.

DONATE

This is the quickest solution. You can easily donate your old CDs to a public library, a local Goodwill, or give them to friends and family who may love the artist. You could try to sell them first and then the ones that do not sell can be easily donated to either a non-profit organization in the area or your local church group, etc.

Recycle

While the easiest way out is to leave your boxes of CDs on the curb, you might also want to consider recycling your collection instead. Recycling means your treasured CDs won’t meet an undignified end in a landfill and might give you a tax write-off at the end of the year.

In the state of New Hampshire, for example, is the CD Recycling Center of America. You’ll need to pay shipping to get your CDs to the Granite State, but you should be able to use USPS Media Mail Rate or UPS Ground Hundredweight to ship your boxes at a discounted rate.

ORGANIZE THEM

Maybe you love your CDs and don’t want to part ways with them. That’s fine! If you decide to go this route, think about keeping them in a place where they are accessible and be seen. If you have specific albums that are collectibles, find unique ways to display them. You don’t have to throw out CDs just because they aren’t entirely relevant anymore, you never know when something will go back in style.

GET CREATIVE

There are so many cool things that can be created using old CDs. You could use them in various projects:

  • For craft projects, a CD is a perfect template to draw a perfect circle

  • Cover them with felt and use them as coasters

  • Use old CDs to catch candle drips of wax

  • Place a CD in an oven on low heat until its soft and bend the CD into the desired shape to make a cool bowl

  • Use CDs as a sidewalk or driveway reflector

  • Hang them on your Christmas tree as a quirky ornament

  • Use a CD as a decorative sun catcher. This is an easy DIY project.

Have any tips for what to do with your CD collection? I’d love to hear them!
